  1. The portrait on the left is a classic of the Age, and a relic of the era when fitness was more a function of recreation in sport than in the gym. We know these facial expressions have not been repealed by the new fitness methods but something of their natural effect has been modified. The portrait on the right, not purporting to convey the same expression, places it in a physical context which did not arise through the same way of development. I think of the mode on the left as extractive, and on the right, productive.
