  1. William Hazlitt with a knife. As good as they got, in the long era when his medium carried genuine influence. Stalwart -- and that is gone, too, except among the brownshirts and their merchant paymasters.

  2. I grew up with the L.A. Times in my house in the 1970s and 1980s, and I loved turning to the Op-Ed page so that I could see the latest Conrad cartoon. Even though as a kid I didn't understand all the politics and social issues that he aimed his pen at, I did recognize that these were drawings with wit, grace, intelligence, poignancy, and bite.
