  1. The chest portrait (anonymous, to me) reminds me of a Weber of a rowing boy. The others are too well ensconced in affection to be trifled with, but their sombre quality seems especially timely. These are models who project qualities we believe in and wish to protect; we always have their like in the back of our mind, as definitively generous embodiments of unities which nourish the spirit as motive for and test of the character of civilisation we bequeath. We allow them to typify an ideal heir, roommate, or date, but it isn't their handsomeness we have in mind in this context, but their generosity with it. This generosity is our nature, and even if you would like to say that it is we who impute it to them, it remains our need and our right to demand a place for it in our world. There isn't another where we can act.

Now we are handed over, by Citizens United v. FEC, to a world possessed by fictions that anathematise generosity, which is to say, anathematise our spirit and the driving force of our lives. These youths take us out of despair for admiration's sake, to be sure. Now: what on earth is admiration for?
