A few hard facts about the Republican Party

The Greatest Show on Earth!

It is always a great pleasure and delight to see conservative Republicans continue to self-destruct – to watch these rash, partisan hotheads dig their collective grave even deeper, in full view of responsible citizens of the United States. Last night (09/09/09), in the historic chamber of the U.S. House of Representatives, Republican politicians demonstrated that – as a group! – they now have no shame, and no scruples, in displaying two astonishing, reprehensible characteristics:

First, they are completely unfit to govern the United States. As evidence, we need merely look at the complete mess they left behind over the past eight years. Just look what happened on their watch. The GOP proved itself to be a party of foolishness and incompetence in war, destructiveness and incompetence in domestic policy, stupidity and incompetence in foreign policy, and much more -- too much to recount here. The GOP’s current agenda continues to be one of mindless obstructionism, ceaseless negativism, tax cuts for the rich, favors for big business, indifference toward the middle class, disrespect toward the Constitution, bigotry toward virtually every minority in the nation, spiritual and religious intolerance, and . . . well, you get the picture. We could go on all day and all night, and it would make us sick.

Second, Republican conservatives have proven themselves to be incapable of civility and civil discourse in American society. Last night’s repulsive outburst by Rep. Joe Wilson (R-South Carolina), calling President Obama a liar during a joint session of Congress, was not merely unforgiveable (and he won’t be forgiven). It was also unforgettable. Rest assured that the vast majority of voters in the United States will not soon forget Wilson’s barbarism and hotheaded foolishness. Voters will view it as the most distrubing “crown jewel” in the collective efforts of Republican conservatives to mislead voters, manufacture lies, rabble rouse, and poison the waters of public debate -- simply to gain the cheapest sort of tawdry political advantage. U.S. voters of all persuasions won’t forget this, and Republican conservatives will be further marginalized at the ballot box in the years ahead. It's a political fact.

I’ve spouted lots of glittering generalizations here – but it amazes me that every single one of them is absolutely true. Nothing but the truth. You can't make this stuff up! What’s even more amazing is the fact that, yes, we can throw many brickbats at the shortcomings of the Democratic Party, but, alas, the Republican Party has truly outdone itself in earning our disdain and disrespect. As a matter of fact, Sen. Harry Reid and Rep. Nancy Pelosi are now distinguished leaders – nay, paragons of virtue! -- compared with a trash politician like Joe Wilson and his irresponsible cohorts in the GOP.

One final thought. You’ve got to stand in awe of South Carolina: the people of that state really know how to crank out Republican hypocrites, crackpots, and nut-cases. It’s a gift that keeps on giving! Let’s hope it continues. The more jerks we get from South Carolina, the greater will be our progress in permanently curbing the regressive, destructive politics of the conservative Right in the United States. The GOP will hoist itself with its own petard, and it's well on its way.
