  2. From Isaiah, we have the phrase, "His warfare is accomplished." This was a gaudy and prodigal struggle at its apex, masking absolute mountains of private perseverance for others about whom we will simply never know, but have heard from enough, to know that they stretch from the gulags of the Soviet steppes and their Russian renascence to the black sites of the United States Department of Justice.

The country has been in this suspense before, knowing that until the ground at Arlington closes over a Kennedy - again - there is only gratitude to be felt, and gladness for his release from our clawing reliance.

But then there will come the first Monday in the lives of most readers of this blog, ever to dawn without an unconditional trust in the existence of a ferocious and implacable advocate for justice in this nation. That's how rare his rapport has been with us. I have the prayer that a trowel's allocation of his mountains of struggle will be placed in all our pockets, so that we can trust ourselves.
